Used Russian AK
A guy I know wants $200 for it. Seems like a fair deal. Any input? Think I ought to buy?
|
Re: Used Russian AK
OK, we're gonna need a LITTLE more info. Which AK is he offering you for $200? Shooting blind from the seat of my pants, $200 would be a very good price, depending upon WHICH AK you are purchasing. The average cost of a GOOD AK starts around twice that amount and only goes up.
Also, any accessories? Specifically spare mags and ammo? |
Re: Used Russian AK
If it shoots, $200 is a killer price.

Re: Used Russian AK
A lot of things are CALLED "AK"
Exactly what rifle are we considering here? |

Re: Used Russian AK
Hmmm $200 and russian, almost sounds like he is talking about a saiga.
If so, that is only slightly better than NIB. Dave |
Re: Used Russian AK
I believe it's very hard to find a semi-auto Russian AK...almost all are full auto.
I'm interested in what you are being offered but not optimistic it is a true Russian AK. |
Re: Used Russian AK
I'm going to call him tomorrow and look at it. He is hurting for cash so maybe it is a legit bargain.
|
Re: Used Russian AK
Make sure you check the bore and chamber. Maybe ask him to let you shoot it first. Can you meet him at the range?
|
Re: Used Russian AK
It seems to shoot ok. Has a star on it and says 1952 so I'd guess that's when it was made. Don't know about the shape of the bore. I bought it anyway. Looks like a decent gun.
He had a really nice Chinese gun. He said it was an AK. It said Norinco on it and it had a thumbhole stock. Felt really good in the hands. $400. Too much to drop right now. Probably a decent buy though. |

Re: Used Russian AK
its an SKS dude. get some pics of the net and look at the receiver cover and you will see the diff. russkies werent even making semi aks back in 52, only real ones.. if you took one of those and converted it to semi it would probably still run afoul of a lot of NFA rules you dont want to dick around with

Re: Used Russian AK
I really don't know much about rifles. I haven't a clue what the dif is between an AK and an SKS. It's just a gun. It'll shoot the ammo I have on hand. It isn't automatic so I don't think it'll raise any eyebrows, but I don't know what rules are out there concerning these things. You say it may run afoul of some laws?
I will use it on the pesky deer that raid my garden. They are good eating and at the price of meat right now they are looking better and better. |
Re: Used Russian AK
There is a big difference in an AK and an SKS.
First an SKS is worth about $150, an AK $300 and up. 98% of SKS rifles have a built in clip/magazine that I believe holds about 10 rounds. The AK uses removable magazines usually of 20-30 rounds capacity. The Norinco MAK 90 is a Chinese version of a semi automatic AK with the thumbhole stock to beat certain gun importation laws enacted in the early 1990's. They are excellent rifles as they have thicker metal in the receiver and a double hook trigger which makes the trigger action smoother. Just google "AK" and "SKS" to see what they look like or see these links. Original AK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-47 SKS rifle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKS |

Re: Used Russian AK
Any Russian SKS for $200 is an excellent deal. They are soooo much better than the Chinese.
|
Re: Used Russian AK
A Russian SKS is worth more than $200 in most places, they have some collectability.
|
Re: Used Russian AK
Have heard prices of between 4-5 hundred for a Russian SKS in good shape, lately. The last one I sold out of a case of ten I bought in 1994, I got $300 for. This was at least six years ago.

Re: Used Russian AK
The Russian SKS is a great deal for $200 if it's in decent shape.
It's a great shooter! Now strip it down, clean it thoroughly and give it a light oiling. Pay particular attention to cleaning the firing pin assembly. There are some nice synthetic stocks available for your rifle. http://www.marstar.ca/images/skscarbineb.gif |

Got an AR up for sale

Re: Used Russian AK
woodman,
Find yourself about twenty stipper clips. Each one will hold 10 round and you can feed them into your rifle by inserting the bottom of the stipper clip into the spot on the top of the receiever really easily. This is what made the SKS such a great rifle before the Russians started huge mass production of the AK's. You can reload ten rounds in less than ten seconds if you practice. And then you are ready to go. And for $200 you got a bargain. Even if it's NOT a Russian weapon, which it sounds like it is, a good SKS for $200 is a great deal. Hang onto it. I wish I still had the one I bought more than ten years ago. Traded it off, the reason escape me now. And if you are going to hunt deer, use Soft Points from Wolf. They work great. But check your local laws. SOME places don't allow you to use a semi auto rifle that holds ten rounds. Just FYI. Oh, and to everyone else, I own five round, ten round, twenty round, thirty round and 75 round magazines. I've heard (but not purchased) both forty round and forty five round magazines for AK's. These are all 'double stack' magazines. EXCEPT the 75 round drum, which is a Chinese one that is loaded by unlocking the back and opening it to load in your ammo. |
Re: Used Russian AK
Hell, I paid $200 for my Norinco SKS back in the 90s. $200 for a real Russian SKS is a baaaahgain as they usually don't sell for under 300 on gunbroker.com
BTW, you can get detachable magazines for it. thats the only thing I use on mine. heres a real good site for SKS and other eastern block nation rifles http://www.sksman.com/ |
Re: Used Russian AK
I've only seen Yugos for $200.
